The 3rd annual San Francisco Bay Area Bicycle Expo returns on November 6th, 2010 at the Cow Palace. Last year, we turned the bicycle world upside down. We paired low rider bicycles with BMX bikes, showcased bike fashion, put on the first mountain bike dirt jump competition in San Francisco and ran a cyclocross race right next to those high flyers.

This year, we bring it all back plus more!

The SF BIKE EXPO has 8 main events and features, keeping attendees in circulation around the two halls and outdoor facilities.

Andrew Taylor’s Showdown: San Francisco’s Only Mountain Bike Dirt Jump Comp

Pedal Savvy Fashion Show: A true bike fashion resource by Gwendolyn Lee Productions.

The Cross Palace Cyclocross Race: A huge hit at the 2009 introduction! The race produced by Santa Rosa’s Bike Monkey actually goes in and back out of the Cow Palace.

BMX Jam: Hosted by local apparel leaders Avant Garde.

Low Rider Arcade: Art meets passion as the low rider community shows off their work.

Behind Bars Inc. Custom and Vintage Bicycle Show: Classic metal and insane creations hosted by San Jose’s Behind Bars.

Vendor Expo Area: The Industry Trade Show hall that allows vendors to show off the latest and greatest bikes, gear, apparel, parts, and offerings to a very eager public.

Community Swap Meet: The swap hall is separated from the Vendor Expo area, and is the place to be for bargains and hard to find parts from independent sellers, bike shops looking to clear out older merchandise, and companies that recognize the need for an avenue to move discontinued products.

If you missed it last year, this is your opportunity to catch it again.

Save the date November, 6th at the Cow Palace and look for more events and features to be added soon!

Registration is open for Vendors, Bike Shops and Individuals.

Do zombies exist? They will on Friday, October 8th as East Bay Bike Party celebrates it's *sixth* ride with... ZOMBIES!

Yes, it's the much-anticipated Zombie Ride. So come as the dead, the undead, the living dead, the walking dead, as your favorite zombie hunter, or something else zombie-related.

As usual, the gathering begins at 7:30pm and the ride will leave at 8pm sharp... like the teeth of the zombies we'll be emulating. We leave from Frank Ogawa Plaza (City Hall) and will ride south to Jack London Square, head out to the Port of Oakland (and back), then up through Chinatown, Old Oakland, Uptown and out to Lake Merritt before we stop at the Parkway Lounge.

We've set things up so that we'll have (free) bike parking and (cash) pizza sandwiches available at the Parkway, just like last time we were there (as superheroes). So bring your bike, your inner zombie, and maybe a little cash, and join us on Friday the 8th for the Bike Party ZOMBIE RIDE!!!

And don't forget your lights and helmet, because on that night -- more than ever -- you'll need to protect your BRAINS!!!

  • The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), and the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition (SFBC) are giving out 2,400 free front & rear bicycle lights to bikers who don’t already have them as part of their “Light up the Night” campaign starting on Monday, November 8th.

Free Front & Rear Bicycle Lights

November 8, 2010; 5 to 6:30 pm Market St. at 10th Street, in front Fox Plaza – San Francisco

From The Sentinel: The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), which oversees all surface transportation in the City, and the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition (SFBC) are working together to increase the visibility and safety of people riding bicycles at night by giving out free bicycle lights and safety information as part of their “Light up the Night” campaign. Starting on Monday, November 8, SFMTA and SFBC staff and volunteers will be distributing front and rear bicycle lights to people on bicycles who do not already have lights. A white front light and red rear reflector (or light) are required by law when riding at night, yet some cyclists either cannot afford lights or are not aware of the law.

The “Light up the Night” campaign will target these cyclists by issuing free lights and talking with them about the importance of always using lights at night. The SFMTA purchased 2,400 red and white blinking bicycle lights that will be installed by volunteers from the SFBC and San Francisco Bicycle Advisory Committee (SFBAC) at various locations throughout the winter. Free bicycle safety education classes will be offered by the SFBC in multiple languages in order to reach out to a broad spectrum of San Francisco residents. Bicycle lights will be given out to people who complete this safety education course.

San Francisco Police Department officers will also be given lights and safety information so that they can distribute them to cyclists that they interact with. The SFMTA and the SFBC encourage every cyclist to be visible and safe on city streets. Light colored, bright, or reflective clothing are recommended for people riding bicycles at any time of the day. Established by voter proposition in 1999, the SFMTA, a department of the City and County of San Francisco, oversees the Municipal Railway (Muni), parking and traffic and taxis. With five modes of transit, Muni has approximately 700,000 passenger boardings each day. Over 35,000 extra vehicles enter San Francisco on any given business day, and rely on the SFMTA to keep the flow of cars, transit vehicles, taxis, delivery trucks, pedestrians and bicycles moving smoothly through the streets.
