Name of product: Catlike Kompact™ Bike Helmets Units: 2,250 Distributor: Monarch Velo, LLC, doing business as Catlike USA, of Houston, Texas Hazard: The helmets fail impact testing required under CPSC's safety standard for bicycle helmets, violating the Consumer Product Safety Act. Incidents/Injuries: None reported. Description: This recall involves Catlike Kompact™ adult bicycle helmets. The helmets were sold in two sizes (small/medium and large/extra large) and various colors. The sizing label inside the helmets reads "Kompact" and "SM/MD" or "LG/XL." Sold at: Bicycle shops nationwide sold the helmets from March 2002 through February 2003 for about $130. August 15, 2002 Release # 02-229 Marin's Recall Hotline: (800) 876-9840 CPSC Consumer Hotline: (800) 638-2772 CPSC Media Contact: Kim Dulic, (301) 504-7058 CPSC, Marin Mountain Bikes Announce Recall of Mountain Bikes WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Marin Mountain Bikes, of Novato, Calif., is voluntarily recalling about 1,000 Marin-brand, aluminum-framed mountain bikes. The steer tube on the front of these bicycles can break off from the two main tubes of the frame causing the rider to lose control, fall and possibly suffer serious injury. Marin has received two reports of the steer tube breaking off, resulting in two injuries that included broken bones, broken teeth, cuts and abrasions. The recall involves Marin-brand mountain bikes with aluminum frames. There are seven model bikes with 11.5-inch frames and one model with a 13.5-inch frame. The 11.5-inch bikes have the following model names: Bobcat Trail, Hawk Hill, Palisades Trail, Pioneer Trail, Nail Trail, Stinson and Rocky Ridge. The 13.5-inch model has the model name Quake. The model name is written on the top tube of the mountain bikes. To determine the size of the frame (11.5-inch or 13.5-inch), measure from the center of the crank arm to about 1 inch below the seatpost clamp. Independent bicycle stores nationwide sold these mountain bikes from August 1998 through July 2002 for between $280 and $900. Consumers should stop using the recalled bikes immediately and contact Marin Mountain Bikes to learn where to take their bikes to have the frames replaced free of charge. CPSC, BikeE Corp. Announce Recall of Recumbent Bicycles WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, (CPSC), BikeE Corp., of Corvallis, Ore., voluntarily recalled about 13,500 BikeE recumbent bicycles. The recumbent seats on these bicycles can crack and break, causing the seat to come off the frame and resulting in injury to the rider. BikeE Corp. has received two reports of seats on these bicycles breaking while riding, resulting in one injury that included a broken leg. The recall includes all 1999 through 2001 model BikeE bicycles with 27- inch-tall seat backs, silver-colored seat frames with black mesh seat backs. "BikeE" is written on the frame of these bicycles. BikeE-authorized dealers nationwide sold the recalled recumbent bicycles from February 1999 through February 2002 for between $550 and $2,150. Consumers should stop using these bicycles immediately. The firm, BikeE, is out of business and cannot be contacted. As the firm is no longer involved with this recall, consumers can take a recalled bicycle to the dealer from which purchased, but it is up to the dealer as to whether the repair can be performed, and whether there is a charge. Recumbent BikeE bicycles with seat backs lower than 27 inches are not included in this recall. Seats with silver-colored rings around the black plastic clamps that attach the seat to the frame of the bicycle have been repaired or are not part of the recall. CPSC and BikeE announced the recall of 700 recumbent tandem bicycles on November 14, 2001, because the steerer tube on the front forks could separate. |

November 29, 2001 Release #02-054 Profile-Design Recall Hotline: (888) 800-5999 CPSC Consumer Hotline: (800) 638-2772 CPSC Media Contact: Kim Dulic, (301) 504-7058 CPSC, Profile-Design LLC Announce Recall of Bicycle "Aero Bars" WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Profile-Design LLC, of Long Beach Calif., is voluntarily recalling about 8,400 "aero bars" used on racing bicycles. The aero bars are handlebar extensions that either mount in the center of the handlebars or are sold as a complete handlebar and stem system. The aero bars allow riders to ride in an aerodynamic crouching position. The brackets that attach the aero bars' forearm pads, where riders rest their arms, can loosen or separate during use, causing the rider to lose control and crash. Profile-Design has received one report of a bracket on one of the aero bars loosening, resulting in a rider crashing and suffering a broken rib and abrasions. The recall includes "Carbon X" TM and "Carbon Stryke" TM aero bars. The Carbon X aero bar is a complete bicycle handlebar and stem system, and includes the writing "Profile Design" and "Carbon X." The Carbon Stryke aero bar attaches to existing bicycle handlebars, and includes the writing "Profile Design" and "Carbon Stryke." Both aero bars are black. Independent bicycle stores worldwide sold the recalled aero bars. The Carbon X aero bars were sold from August 1999 through November 2001 for about $349, and the Carbon Stryke aero bars were sold from May 1999 through November 2001 for about $139. Consumers should stop using the recalled aero bars immediately and contact the company to receive two free replacement brackets. | 5. Shimano has recently become aware of a potential problem with SM-SH92 cleats (Shimano part# Y43Y98030). Please read the following for details: Name of product: SM-SH92 (10? total float) cleats designed for Shimano SPD-R road pedals. Potential Hazard: Unable to clip out of the pedal if the rear protrusion tab breaks on the SM-SH92 cleat from prolonged use. Description: The affected cleat has an engraved marking with the model SM-SH92 that is visible from the backside of the shoe. The SM-SH92 cleats were sold as aftermarket product since 1999. The cleats are compatible and are designed to be used with all Shimano SPD-R pedal models - PD-7700 / 7701 / 6600 / 6601 / 5500 / R535. The SM-SH91 (6? total float) cleats that are supplied with all Shimano SPD-R pedals and the after market product SM-SH90 fixed cleats are not affected by this recall. Sold at: The SM-SH92 cleats were sold as after market items under Shimano part # Y43Y98030 at retail stores. Manufactured in: Osaka, Japan. | 6. November 8, 2004 CPSC, Answer Products Inc. Announce Recall of Bicycle Suspension Forks The following product safety recall was conducted voluntarily by the firm in cooperation with the CPSC. Consumers should stop using the product immediately until the travel upgrade is installed. Name of Product: Manitou Bicycle Suspension Forks Units: About 8,032 Manufacturer/Importer: Answer Products, Inc., Valencia, CA Hazard: The top of the Manitou bicycle suspension fork, when fully compressed, may contact the front tire, resulting in a loss of control of the bicycle and presenting a fall hazard to a bicyclist. Incidents/Injuries: One report of a Manitou Stance allowing the tire to rub against the top of the fork. No injuries have been reported. Description: The recall involves 2005 Manitou Nixon, Stance and Sherman bicycle suspension forks installed on various high-end mountain bicycles. The Manitou bicycle suspension forks have the model names printed on the sides of the lower leg portions of the fork. Specific models are listed in the table below.
Sold at: Retailers and distributors have sold bicycles with the affected forks from July 2004 through September 2004 for over $1,000. Manufactured in: USA and Taiwan Remedy: Consumers should check the back of the lower leg portion of the fork for a decal stating “Tire Clearance Upgrade Installed”. If absent, consumers should stop using the bicycle immediately and contact Answer to arrange for a free travel upgrade kit to be installed at no cost. | 7. November 2, 2004 CPSC, Quality Bicycle Products Announce Recall of Bicycle Forks The following product safety recall was conducted voluntarily by the firm in cooperation with the CPSC. Customers should stop using the product immediately unless otherwise instructed. Name of Product: Salsa Campeon Bicycle Fork Units: About 500 Manufacturer/Importer: Quality Bicycle Products, Inc., of Bloomington, Minn. Hazard: The steering tube on the bicycle fork can crack or break, causing a sudden loss of steering control and causing a fall hazard to bicyclists. Incidents/Injuries: There have been two reports of forks cracking or breaking, including one incident resulting in abrasions and bruises to the rider. Description: The recall involves carbon fiber/aluminum forks included with the Salsa model F-01 Campeon frame set in either White/Black or Red/Black color combinations. Units included in this recall have a code of CK, DA, or DB and a serial number from 03400 to 04600. The model number, date code and serial number are located on a label at the base of the steerer tube near the crown of the fork. Sold at: Bicycle specialty stores nationwide from April 2004 through June 2004. The Salsa frameset that included the recalled bicycle fork sold for about $940. Announce Recall of Bicycle Attachment WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announces the following recall in voluntary cooperation with the firm below. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. Name of product: Adams Trail-a-Bike or Adams Slipstream Bicycle Attachment Units: About 80,000 Importer: Norco Products Ltd., of British Columbia, Canada Hazard: The hardware used in the assembly of the universal hitch may come loose causing the unit to separate from the lead bicycle, which could lead to a serious injury or death to the rider of the bicycle attachment. Incidents/Injuries: Norco Products has received two reports of hardware falling out of the hitch assembly. One minor injury reported. Description: The recall involves the Adams Trail-A-Bike or Adams Slipstream sold under the following models: Starter, Folder, Shifter, Shocker, Ultimate Tandem, Deluxe Folder, Me 2 and Original. “Trail-A-Bike” or “Slipstream” is printed on the top tube of the bicycle attachment and “Adams” is printed on the chain guard. The product resembles a children’s bicycle without a front wheel and has an elongated top tube that stretches to attach to the seat post of an adult bicycle, creating a tandem. The product was sold for use by children ages 4 to 7. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. Name of Product: Dimension Bicycle Road and Mountain Threadless Handlebar Stems Units: About 18,000 Manufacturer: Quality Bicycle Products Inc., of Bloomington, Minn. Hazard: These handlebar stems can crack or break, causing the bicycle rider to fall and suffer injuries. Incidents/Injuries: There has been one report of a handlebar stem breaking that resulted in minor abrasions and bruises to the rider. Description: The recall involves all Dimension-brand road and mountain threadless bicycle stems with a 130 degree rise. The stems are black or silver and have the word “Dimension” painted on the extension. Only models SM2330 to SM2333, SM4555 to SM4558, SM4567, and SM4570 to SM4573 are included in this recall. The model numbers are printed on the original packaging. These handlebar stems all have a 130-degree “high rise” but vary in extension length. Sold at: Bicycle specialty stores, Web and mail order retailers nationwide from January 2003 through March 2005 for about $25.
