WHEELS MANUFACTURING ACCELERATOR CASSETTE $130 190-200g JUNE-AUGUST, 2002, by ROB
SALES FEATURES: A modified Shimano Ultegra cassette that fits Shimano free-hub bodies, but is respaced to work with Campy 9-speed cassettes.
SIZES AND COLORS AVAILABLE: Chromica. 11-21,11-23, 12-23, 12-25(tested), 12-27
UNDER WHAT CONDITIONS HAVE YOU USED THIS PRODUCT,or what type of riding (terrain) do you do? Criterium racing and traing on a Saris PowerTap rear hub.
ARE YOU SATISFIED WITH THIS PRODUCT and would you recommend it to others? Mostly. It works better with Campy 9 than a stock Ultegra cassette, but its not as smooth as Campy 9.
PRODUCTS IN COMPETITION with the product I chose to test, including features, limitations, or characteristics of these other products (i.e. price too high, comfort, fit, color, ride, low maintenance, cheesy, tres chic, hooks up). No other company makes such a product. You might be able to modify an Ultegra cassette yourself, but it would take a lot of time and effort.
Was this product easy to set up? Any notable set-up hints or comments? Easy. Just like installing any other cassette. You may have to play with the number of spacers placed behind the cassette to get it placed just right.
"COOLNESS FACTOR" RATING: (i.e. 'dogmeat', 'OK', 'high', 'stratosphere') Average. It's just a cassette.
QUALITY RATING: OK. It's not as smooth as I expected.
OTHER COMMENTS: This is pretty expensive for a part of your bike that you will wear out regularly. I suppose I could recommend it to other people, but it seems like the kind of thing you'd hardly need. If you have Campy 9-speed, there are many cool wheelsets that work well and allow you to run a Campy 9 speed cassette. My 'situation' was that PowerTap is Shimano only, and I'm Campag only.

FSA CARBON PRO CRANKSET $379.99 555 grams Spring-Summer, 2003 by Phil
SALES FEATURES: One piece crankarm and spider. Super stiff.

UNDER WHAT CONDITIONS HAVE YOU USED THIS PRODUCT,or what type of riding (terrain) do you do?Training and racing for 6 months on the road-rain and dry.
ARE YOU SATISFIED WITH THIS PRODUCT and would you recommend it to others? Very satisfied. The price is steep, but these cranks are dope.
PRODUCTS IN COMPETITION with the product I chose to test, including features, limitations, or characteristics of these other products (i.e. price too high, comfort, fit, color, ride, low maintenance, cheesy, tres chic, hooks up). Dura-Ace (Hollowtech), 594g $199.99, Campagnolo Record Carbon Crankset. 500g, $799.99
Was this product easy to set up? Any notable set-up hints or comments? Has the same dimensions as the Dura-Ace 7700 Crankset that I previously used on my bike, but with one exception; the crank sits outboard of the bb by about 1 mm further than Dura-Ace, requiring a slight f. derailleur adjustment.
"COOLNESS FACTOR" RATING: (i.e. 'dogmeat', 'OK', 'high', 'stratosphere') Dopocity!
QUALITY RATING: 10
OTHER COMMENTS:The chainrings are better than the Dura-Ace Alloy-nickle plated rings. FSA's are 7075 alloy and improved the front shifting on my bike noticeably

Time ATAC World Cup $145 396g by Rob
SALES FEATURES:
Wider platform than previous Time MTB pedals. Smaller diameter bearing cup allows foot placement closer to crankarm. 10 degree rotational float, 16mm lateral float, 15 degree or 20 degree release angle, depending on cleat placement. Clears mud well.
SIZES AND COLORS AVAILABLE:
1 size., black/world stripes.
UNDER WHAT CONDITIONS HAVE YOU USED THIS PRODUCT,or what type of riding (terrain) do you do?
MTB riding and racing. Cyclocross riding and racing. Road riding
ARE YOU SATISFIED WITH THIS PRODUCT and would you recommend it to others?
Very satisfied. I would highly recommend these pedals.
PRODUCTS IN COMPETITION with the product I chose to test, including features, limitations, or characteristics of these other products (i.e. price too high, comfort, fit, color, ride, low maintenance, cheesy, tres chic, hooks up).
Shimano 858. About the same price. More open body design than the past but still not as good as Time.
Bontrager Re-1. Cheaper than Time and Shimano, but lower quality. I have broken the body on these at least once. They claim good mud clearance, but are no better than Shimano.
Was this product easy to set up? Any notable set-up hints or comments?
Very easy to set up. Cleats fit all standard SPD style shoes.
"COOLNESS FACTOR" RATING: (i.e. 'dogmeat', 'OK', 'high', 'stratosphere')
High coolness factor, especially at cross races.
QUALITY RATING:
Good quality.
OTHER COMMENTS:
Once you get used to where the cleat goes in the pedal they are good. It is, however, a little different feel than Shimano. Great performance in sloppy mud conditions. I didn't have any cleat/shoe problems for a whole cyclo-cross season.

Look pedals-very much like Shimano, but are heavier, cleats aren't as walkable.
Speedplay x-2 pedals- more float, cleats impossible to walk on.
Was this product easy to set up? Any notable set-up hints or comments?
Not very much float, cleat needs proper rotation, harder to adjust than Look.

SIZES AND COLORS AVAILABLE:
UNDER WHAT CONDITIONS HAVE YOU USED THIS PRODUCT,or what type of riding (terrain) do you do?

"COOLNESS FACTOR" RATING: (i.e. 'dogmeat', 'OK', 'high', 'stratosphere')
It's the'in' thing.
QUALITY RATING:
Well made.
OTHER COMMENTS:
I think I like a traditional flat topped racing saddle, but one with a softer nose. terry's womens race saddle works fine, but could use longer rails. The mens Terry is painful, however.

SALES FEATURES:

SIZES AND COLORS AVAILABLE:
Women's version is the Butterfly, men's is the Fly.
UNDER WHAT CONDITIONS HAVE YOU USED THIS PRODUCT,or what type of riding (terrain) do you do?
Road, Mountain, and commuting. It's so comfy that I bought one for all my bikes. This is honestly the best saddle I've ever ridden!
ARE YOU SATISFIED WITH THIS PRODUCT and would you recommend it to others?
Very, extremely satisfied and very highly recommended!
PRODUCTS IN COMPETITION with the product I chose to test, including features, limitations, or characteristics of these other products (i.e. price too high, comfort, fit, color, ride, low maintenance, cheesy, tres chic, hooks up).
Avocet 02-this is a very nice saddle also, the best I've ridden until the Butterfly. It is slightly wider though, so it is harder to get behind the seat off-road. Also, it is much harder (stiffer) so I didn't find it as comfortable. The cutaway on the Terry helps a lot.
Was this product easy to set up? Any notable set-up hints or comments?
Very easy.
"COOLNESS FACTOR" RATING: (i.e. 'dogmeat', 'OK', 'high', 'stratosphere')
This saddle is very cool. It is subtle in it's look because it is small. The leather cover and embroidered butterfly add style. Since the cut-out isn't huge and the saddle isn't super-wide or super-cushy, it looks sleeker than most comfy saddles.
QUALITY RATING:
GREAT!
OTHER COMMENTS:
If you buy this saddle, you won't regret the $90 price tag, guaranteed!

PRODUCTS IN COMPETITION with the product I chose to test, including features, limitations, or characteristics of these other products (i.e. price too high, comfort, fit, color, ride, low maintenance, cheesy, tres chic, hooks up).
Terry saddles-I like the race versions with vinyl/fake leather covers and no cut-out hole. I find the cut-out models to be too abrasive from the edges of the cut-out.
Avocet o2. A very nice saddle that I unfortunately found too hard in the nose area of the saddle.

Saris Powertap System

$800 400g rear hub June-August 2002 by Rob
SALES FEATURES:
Measures power output/heartrate of the rider in real time and records information for later download. ALso measures energy expended in Kilojoules. It has all the basic functions of a cyclometer including cadence.
SIZES AND COLORS AVAILABLE:
Available as a hub only, or as a complete wheel in 26" and 700c. Shimano compatible only. Requires Windows-based computer for download kit.
UNDER WHAT CONDITIONS HAVE YOU USED THIS PRODUCT,or what type of riding (terrain) do you do?
Criterium racing and road training. Also used MTB version on local off-road rides. Usedin heat, wet, mud, fog/cold.
ARE YOU SATISFIED WITH THIS PRODUCT and would you recommend it to others?
I like it a lot. It gives a very objective measurement of effort in real time. I highly recommend this to people who are interested in quantifying their training on a regular basis.
PRODUCTS IN COMPETITION with the product I chose to test, including features, limitations, or characteristics of these other products (i.e. price too high, comfort, fit, color, ride, low maintenance, cheesy, tres chic, hooks up).
cateye 3DX. The Saris provides more useful and detailed information by measuring both heart rate and wattage. Wattage with heart rate provides a very clear picture of what you did and makes comparisons with other rides more accurate and direct. The Cateye is lighter and cheaper ($250 or so).
Polar S710. Lighter and cheaper ($500 or so) Wireless weird mounting of sensors to rear mech seems dubious, but I hear it works well. Not compatible with MTB's.
Was this product easy to set up? Any notable set-up hints or comments?
Everything attaches with rubber tape and wire ties (kinky, I know). It's important to get the chainstay sensor spaced properly with the rear hub. 5" to 7" is a good range.
"COOLNESS FACTOR" RATING: (i.e. 'dogmeat', 'OK', 'high', 'stratosphere')
Pretty high in the physiology set. Most people seem intrigued by it, but don't understand what it does. Others are pretty cynical about it, "all it really does is quantify how slow I am."
QUALITY RATING:
High. This product had a bad reputation several years ago. Once properly set up, I've had no trouble in 3 months of abusing it.
OTHER COMMENTS:
It's pretty expensive, and the rear hub is 1/2 lb. heavier than Dura-Ace. I think it's worth it. I downloaded evvery criterium I raced this summer and can determine which were the hardest, based on average heartrate, power, and speed. The download software seems simplistic, and could use some improvement.

Rim is made with Niobium, an addition to the alum. alloy. do not use extreme condition (hard) brake pads. They will chew up the rim.
"COOLNESS FACTOR" RATING: (i.e. 'dogmeat', 'OK', 'high', 'stratosphere')
Cool looking, unique combination of modern and traditional looks, not paired spoking.
QUALITY RATING:
Highest.
OTHER COMMENTS:
I was amazed at how the rims got chewed up and was unaware that I was using extreme condition brake pads. I have alerted Shimano and AMer. Was this product easy to set up? Any notable set-up hints or comments?
Rear bnad slides on straps to position band at back of head. If band is held too low it will cut into the back of your ears. The sweatband under the chin got in the way of pulling helmet tight. I threw it away.
"COOLNESS FACTOR" RATING: (i.e. 'dogmeat', 'OK', 'high', 'stratosphere')
High coolness, positively frosty.
QUALITY RATING:
seems to be good, although earlobe strap sliders don't stay tight and the decals are peeling off.
OTHER COMMENTS:
I've never had a really nice helmet. My last helmet was a $30 Bell helmet. After 3 years, the outer shell cracked and flaked away. The Catlike's outer shell is bonded to the polystyrene so that should not happen. The shell fits my head well, but I hear the retention band doesn't work for everyone or that the shell is a sloppy fit (lots of side-toside motion even with straps engaged). for me, I get a comfortable, snug fit. The helmet does not scoot around on my head.

This is a great cycling jacket that doubles as avest, 2 garments in one. Perfect for rides that start off cold but warm up.
PRODUCTS IN COMPETITION with the product I chose to test, including features, limitations, or characteristics of these other products (i.e. price too high, comfort, fit, color, ride, low maintenance, cheesy, tres chic, hooks up).
Hind Microcycle- $60, no pockets but excellent reflective piping front and rear. Compresses smaller.
P.I. Zephyr $60, traditional screaming yellow windbreaker, most compressible.
Was this product easy to set up? Any notable set-up hints or comments?
Hem drawstrings are located inside the hand pockets. Very roomy cut, so you might need a smaller than usual size.
"COOLNESS FACTOR" RATING: (i.e. 'dogmeat', 'OK', 'high', 'stratosphere')
High coolness for clever convertability to vest. It's possible to unzip while riding, but I wouldn't try converting from vest to jacket while pedalling.
QUALITY RATING:
very well sewn and zippers don't catch on fabric much.
OTHER COMMENTS:
This jacket/vest really needs reflective piping. The jacket is kind of bulky with all the pockets and zippers. Minmalists should not consider purchasing it. The jacket does a good job of keeping me warm.

P.I. Allegro- $275- really nice but very pricey. Also a dark color, no buttflap.
Craft Rainjacket-$120- also nice for the price, bright yellow, not as nicely fitting as the Castelli.

Extremely cool
QUALITY RATING:
9.5-10
OTHER COMMENTS:
The on enegative to this otherwise superb piece of equipment is that it is black & grey. Granted there are a lot of reflective strpes on it, but a cycling outer piece should be a more visible color. I do look forward to wearing it in the snow.

Trek Grocery bag. Seeing how i'm commuting, not touring with these, an open, large capacity, basket-style bag was an option, but I like the potential for touring, the security (as well as overstuffing capabilities) of theese closeable bags, the high quality of the materials, the design, the manufacturing of panniers made for touring. Plus, they have heel cut-outs & are lightweight, in contrast to grocery bag panniers.

I built it in my living room with an allen set. The 12-27 cassette it cam ewith didn't work with the short R.Der. No worries, I stuck a 12-25 on and it works great. The Bianchi does not have as plush a ride as a carbon Trek, but it is stiffer for climbing and sprinting. Do you want comfort or get up and go? The only doenside is the usual short Bianchi warranty. If you want 1 bike for the rest of your life, buy a Trek (lifetime warranty). The San Lorenzo is a lite, zippy ride that you will probably have to replace after 5 years!
